To be Short or to be Medium? That is the question. The reason this is a real question is because the innovative nature of Defiance spilled over into areas that include known industry standards. Long before Defiance started, the firearms manufacturing community settled on naming length standards that are widely used today.

Defiance, being the rogue manufacturer that it is, decided to go in a different direction. The Defiance Short is the same length as the Remington Model 7. The Defiance Medium is the same length as the Remington Short.

Defiance was the first to come out with a “medium” length action with the XM. The XM is a length that is exclusive to Defiance. This design was improved upon with the XM+ which is now evolved into the industry standard called the Medium.

The Defiance Long action has always been the same length as the Remington Long action. This is the one exception where Defiance naming is the same as industry standards. Until now.
As of January 2024, Defiance is aligning its length naming policy with the rest of the industry. The Defiance Medium (Remington Short) will be changed to the Defiance Short Action. The Defiance XM will remain the XM but this action is rarely made. The Defiance XM+ (industry standard Medium) will be changed to the Defiance Medium Action.

These changes further support our commitment to listening to our builder and shooter customers. Aligning our naming with industry standards makes it easier for everyone to communicate what action they are using and the corresponding items that go with it. Some have said, “It’s about time.” We couldn’t agree more, and we will continue to do all we can to support and enhance our customer’s experience.
